BASEBALL TEAM NAMED COLLEGEBASEBALLINSIDER.COM TEAM OF THE WEEK
April 23, 2008
ARLINGTON, Texas - - A national Web site that covers NCAA Division I baseball has awarded UT Arlington's baseball team with its top weekly honor - National Team of the Week.
UTA had one of its best weeks in recent memory, starting with a 7-3 victory at Clay Gould Ballpark against Oklahoma State. In that game, junior right-hander Matt Otteman held the Cowboys to one run on five hits through six innings. UTA's offense pounded out 14 hits.
The next night, UTA traveled to Austin and sent freshman left-hander Marc Picca to the mound. Picca and four Maverick relievers held the 20th-ranked Longhorns to seven hits.
UTA followed those two non-conference games by taking two of three against Southeastern Louisiana in SLC play.
Honorable mention Team of the Week honors went to Temple, which rebounded from a loss to Delaware to defeat George Mason and sweep first-place Duquesne in an Atlantic 10 series.
"It's nice to be recognized for what we did, and I think it shows that our guys are getting better," Mavericks coach Darin Thomas said. "We actually had a really good stretch of eight games, so it has been a great two weeks. By no means does it mean we're already where we want to be, but we're taking steps to get there."
