ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington's hold on a share of first place in the Western Athletic Conference will be put to the test this weekend against Dallas Baptist. The three-game series at Clay Gould Ballpark opens Friday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch.
The Mavericks (24-21, 12-6) are tied for the top spot in the WAC with CSU Bakersfield going into the final nine games of the regular season. The Patriots (23-22, 9-9) is tied for fifth in the conference.
"They have a veteran club," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "They have a lot of guys back that can really swing the bat. They have good arms. They're about like everybody else. There are a lot of us that are about the same in any given weekend can play well. Hopefully we can play well.
"We're at home for the next couple of weekends. We've put ourselves in good position after six weekends. We're tied for first. We need a good weekend. We need to try to win the series and hopefully we can get that done."
UT Arlington and DBU have a history together having met 63 times, but this weekend is the first clash as league foes. The Mavericks lead the series 24-12 at home, but Thomas is 4-9 against the Patriots. DBU took all three meetings between the clubs last season.
"I don't know [considering DBU a] rival, but I consider them a good club and well-coached," Thomas said. "They're a team we better play well or we're going to get tails kicked if we don't."
The Mavericks send with Friday starter Brad Vachon (5-3, 3.00 ERA) to the hill Friday, while Dallas Baptist counters with Jake Johansen (5-4, 5.37 ERA) in the opener.
