NEW ORLEANS - The UT Arlington Mavericks earned the No. 2 seed for the 2014 Sun Belt Baseball Championship set for May 21-25 at Stanky Field in Mobile, Ala. The Mavericks enter the tournament having won seven consecutive games, including back-to-back conference sweeps.
The Mavericks (30-25, 19-11 SBC) went 18-9 during the months of April and May and are 9-1 in their last ten games. UTA will take on seventh-seeded South Alabama on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. CT. USA (22-31, 11-18 SBC), as tournament host, reserved the right to choose the time of its first-round game. UTA swept the Jaguars earlier this season.
The UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns tied a school record with its 49th win on Saturday as the Cajuns defeated the UL Monroe Warhawks and earned the No. 1 seed. The Cajuns claimed the regular season title in 2014, the school's first title since 2010. The 49 wins marked a new SBC best during the regular season as the Cajuns went 49-7 overall and 26-4 in SBC play.
The Cajuns will begin their quest for the school's second tournament title and first since 1998 on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. CT as the Cajuns will take on the eighth-seeded Warhawks (22-34, 11-19) for a seventh time this season. The Cajuns are 6-0 on the year against the Warhawks.
The Warhawks earned the eighth and final seed in the tournament by virtue of a tie-breaker. UALR, ULM and Georgia State all finished the regular season at 11-19. The combined conference record amongst those three teams was first considered. ULM swept UALR and took two-of-three from GSU to post a 5-1 record. UALR and GSU posted a 2-4 record; therefore, ULM earned the eighth seed.
Arkansas State earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament and will take on sixth-seeded Troy (24-30, 11-18 SBC) on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. CT. The Red Wolves (30-25, 18-12 SBC) dropped two-of-three to UALR in the season finale but head into the tournament having won 30 or more games for the third time in the past five seasons.
A-State took two-of-three from the Trojans the last time they faced off.
Texas State (28-26, 16-14 SBC) will be the tournament's No. 4 seed and will face WKU (29-26, 15-15 SBC) in the tournament's first game on Wednesday at 9 a.m. CT. The Bobcats claimed the season series with WKU, winning two-of-three from the Hilltoppers.
The double-elimination formatted tournament begins play on Wednesday, May 21 at 9:00 a.m. and will be conducted over five days culminating with the Championship Game on Sunday, May 25 at 1:00 p.m. CT. All games will be available via webstream on the Sun Belt Digital Network. The championship game will be aired on the Sun Belt Network and ESPN3.
Championship festivities get underway on Tuesday night with Championship Family Night, a celebration of this season's accomplishments both on and off the field for the student-athletes in attendance.
