BSB: Shortall, Bottger named All-Sun Belt
May 20, 2014
MOBILE, Alabama - UT Arlington senior designated hitter Matt Shortall and junior outfielder Ryan Bottger were named to the 2014 All-Sun Belt Conference Baseball first team Tuesday, as selected by the league's head coaches.
Shortall is all-conference for the second consecutive season, having earned first-team honors in the Western Athletic Conference in 2013. Bottger is in his first season at UT Arlington after transferring from Rose State Junior College.
"Matt and Ryan are both very deserving of this recognition," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "I couldn't be any prouder of those two guys and the seasons they've had."
Sophomore second baseman Darien McLemore was named to Sun Belt Conference Leadership Team. The award is given to a letter-winning student-athlete based on leadership, sportsmanship, community service, citizenship, academic excellence and any other qualities valued by the institution.
Shortall built on his All-American year in 2013 by hitting .351 this season. The DH from Dallas set a UTA single-season record with 24 doubles. He's sixth in the SBC in both home runs (nine) and RBI (50). Shortall is among the nation's leaders in doubles (fourth), total bases (eighth) and hits (12).
Bottger leads the Mavericks with a .367 batting average (third in SBC) and .465 on base percentage (second in SBC). Bottger's 21 multi-hit games are second on the team to Shortall's 22. Bottger finished the regular season with six homers, 39 RBI and a .580 slugging percentage.
The second-seeded Mavericks open the Sun Belt Championship against tournament host No. 7 South Alabama on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Stanky Field.
