ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington junior right fielder Preston Beck was named to the All-Southland Conference first team for 2012. Senior pitcher Lance Day and sophomore shortstop Ryan Walker earned second-team honors.
"I feel like all three are deserving of all-conference honors," UT Arlington coach Darin Thomas said. "They have led our team since Day 1 of our season."
Beck, from Dallas, led the SLC in home runs (11) and RBI (60) during the regular season, while hitting .337. Beck started 54 out of 55 games, and had 67 hits. His .575 slugging percentage was also the best in the Southland Conference.
Beck's season was among the best in UTA history. On the school's all-time single-season list, his RBI total is good for sixth and he's tied for eighth in homers.
"It's an awesome accomplishment," Beck said. "It's definitely something that I set out to happen if I had a good season. I felt I played very well this year and finished strong."
Day tied for the conference lead in wins (10-3), led the league in innings (105.0) and sported a 2.91 ERA. He began the season in the bullpen before moving into the rotation and becoming the ace of the staff.
Walker topped the SLC in hits (81), tied for second in runs (53) and led the Mavericks in batting average (.358). The Arlington Martin product was a freshman All-American last season.
The Mavericks finished the regular season with a 32-23 record and tied for third in the SLC with a 19-14 record. UTA enters the Southland Conference Tournament in San Marcos, Texas, as the No. 4 seed. The Mavericks open the tourney Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. against fifth-seeded McNeese State.
