ARLINGTON, Texas - The Oakland Athletics selected UT Arlington junior center fielder Michael Choice (Arlington, Texas) with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft Monday evening.

Choice becomes the first Maverick in school history to be selected in the first round of the draft and is the sixth UTA player to be taken in the top five rounds. Choice joins former Louisiana-Monroe pitcher Ben Sheets (1999) as the highest drafted players in Southland Conference history (Sheets, 10th overall - Milwaukee Brewers).

Choice, who was named the Southland Conference Player and Hitter of the Year, led the league batting .383 with 16 home runs and 59 RBI while leading the country with a school and conference record 76 walks. His .568 on-base percentage ranked second in the nation.

A fixture in the UT Arlington baseball record books in only three seasons, Choice holds the school career home run record (34), ranks second in career batting (.392), RBI (162) and total bases (393) and is third in school history in career slugging (.636), runs (170) and base hits (242).

After a breaking the UTA freshman school record with a .376 batting average and leading the team with seven home runs and 51 RBI in 2008, Choice was named the Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and he was tabbed to five freshman All-America teams.

The following season, Choice hit for the fifth highest batting average in school history (.413) in with a team-high 11 home runs and 52 RBI in 2009. Choice is the only player in school history to post at least 50 RBI in three seasons.

His standout junior season helped land him a spot on the USA Baseball National Collegiate Team where he batted .350 with three home runs and 13 RBI. He led Team USA with three homers at the World Baseball Challenge on his way to all-tournament team honors and winning the tournament's home run hitting award.

Choice entered the 2010 season as a preseason All-American by four national publications, which includes earning second team honors by Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and from Baseball America.

Choice was named as one of 30 semifinalists for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, which is presented annually to the nation's top amateur player. Overall, Choice has earned over 30 conference and national awards/honors during his junior campaign alone with over 50 accolades pouring in over his three-year career as a Maverick.

On being with an American League West team and having a chance to come home and play the Rangers...
"That is special to me. I didn't quite make it to the Rangers, but I'm glad to have been picked up by an American League team."
