Logan Bawcom Drafted in 17th Round by Los Angeles Dodgers
June 8, 2010
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington junior right-handed pitcher Logan Bawcom (Midland, Texas) became the fourth Maverick drafted in the 2010 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft as the Los Angeles Dodgers selected him in the 17th round (532nd overall) on Tuesday.
In a short period of time it has become a historic draft for the UT Arlington baseball program as four players have been selected in the top 17 rounds, including Michael Choice (1st round - 10th overall, Oakland Athletics), Rett Varner (6th round, Florida Marlins), Jason Mitchell (15th round, Kansas City Royals) and Bawcom.
It is the first time in school history that four Mavericks have been selected in the same draft. Three other drafts (2005, 2003, 1999, 1981) have seen three Mavs drafted.
Bawcom had a breakthrough campaign in his first season with the Mavericks as he secured the No. 3 starter role and finished the year with a 5-4 record, 87 strikeouts and 90.2 innings pitched in 11 starts (20 appearances) with a team-leading five saves.
He was used primarily out of the bullpen through the first month of the season, but after making his first conference start he followed with seven consecutive starts pitching at least 7.0 innings while compiling a 5-2 record during that stretch.
Bawcom finished his junior season pitching out of the Mavs' bullpen where he posted his fourth and fifth saves of the season in back-to-back games with a 3.0 inning save against Stephen F. Austin (5/26) and helping UTA remain undefeated in the Southland Conference Tournament with a save against Nicholls (5/27).
He struck out a career-high 10 batters in his first career win, tossing 8.0 innings against UTSA (3/21) in San Antonio.
In addition, it is only the fourth time in Southland Conference history that a program has had four draft picks in the top 17 rounds in a draft (Lamar - 2007, Louisiana-Monroe - 2004, McNeese State - 1995). ULM holds the record for the most draft picks in the top 17 rounds with five in 2004.
