ARLINGTON, Texas -- UTA senior catcher Brady Cox has been picked in the 36th round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Kansas City Royals, going No. 1,080 overall, it was announced on Wednesday evening.
Cox, a product of Fort Worth, Texas, concludes a strong showing for the Mavs in the 2017 MLB Draft, with three UTA stars selected, including ninth-round pick Austin Gardner and 21st round selection Jakob Hernandez. One of the most durable performers in UTA history, Cox is the 61st player in program annals to be picked in the MLB Draft, with the Mavs owning a selection in each of the last nine seasons.
A former star at Arlington Heights High School, Cox finished his decorated career in 2017, playing in 54 games, to run his career total to 184. Cox hit .285 (186-for-652) in his career with 27 doubles, one triple, three homers and 86 RBI, owning a .396 on-base percentage.
In 2016, Cox had a first-team All-Sun Belt Conference season as UTA's durable, everyday backstop, making 55 of UTA's 58 starts behind the plate. He hit .365 to rank third in the league in average, reaching base safely in 51 of his starts and owning a .3379 average in conference action.
