ANDY SAUTER SIGNS FREE AGENT CONTRACT WITH MILWAUKEE BREWERS
June 21, 2009
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington right-handed pitcher Andy Sauter signed a free agent contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday to become the third Maverick pitcher to be drafted or sign a free agent contract with a Major League Baseball organization this season. Sauter is the fourth Maverick to be drafted or sign a free agent deal with the Brewers, joining former Mavericks Joel Alvarado (2001 - 19th rd.), Craig Martin (2001 - FA), Ricky Stover (2003 - 23rd rd.) and Robby Deevers (2003 - 30th rd.).
Sauter had a workout and signed his contract on Saturday and then flew to Arizona on Sunday where he joined other Milwaukee signees at the club's Arizona Rookie League location.
Sauter started the 2009 season as the Mavericks Friday-night starter, and despite missing one month with any injury, tallied a 4-2 record with a 4.55 ERA in 11 appearances (seven starts). He tossed 57.1 innings with 44 strikeouts and allowed just 16 walks. His .257 opponent batting average was the lowest on the team for any pitcher with at least 30 innings pitched.
He was named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week on March 23 after pitching his first career complete-game shutout while leading the Mavericks to a 5-0 victory over Northwestern State at Clay Gould Ballpark. In his dominating effort, Sauter allowed only three hits with one walk and recorded six strikeouts in the 1 hour, 55 minute contest. He needed only 98 pitches as Northwestern State's six base runners never advanced past first base.
In his first victory of the season, Sauter struck out a career-high nine batters in eight innings against UTSA in a 5-3 win. He also notched wins against Nicholls (8.1 IP, 11 H, 6 SO, 1 BB) and Texas State (3.2 IP, 1 H, 0 SO, 2 BB).
Sauter posted six appearances with at least six innings of work and had five outings with at least six strikeouts.
The UT Arlington baseball program has now had 28 Major League Baseball draft or free agent selections since 2001, all players coached by UT Arlington head coach Darin Thomas.
