ARLINGTON, Texas -- Starting pitchers Kaikepono Anderson and David Moffat combined to allow a run over nine innings to highlight game one of the Fall World Series, with Team Bocchi besting Team Smith on a walk-off hit in the ninth inning from Easton Johnson, 2-1 on Wednesday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
UTA baseball has split into a pair of teams, coached by the Maverick assistants, a pair of coaching veterans in Fuller Smith and Joel Bocchi. Bocchi's team, wearing orange uniforms, opened the scoring in the pitching duel between Anderson and Moffat, taking a 1-0 lead in the fifth. After Team Smith, wearing blue, answered in the sixth inning, Johnson's ninth-inning, walk-off single through the drawn-in infield scored Ty Sawka, who walked to leadoff the frame, for the 2-1 win.
The Fall World Series will resume on Friday at 3:30 p.m. CT and Saturday at 9 a.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.
Anderson, a native of Pearl City, Hawaii, starred with five innings in a start for Team Smith, allowing three hits without a walk, striking out five. Team Smith also got three innings in relief from 6-foot-4 righty Andrew Gross and outings from right-handers Tristan Tom and Logan Austin.
A product of Wichita Falls, Texas, Moffat worked four-shutout, two-hit innings, allowing just a walk with two strikeouts. Southpaw Nick Skeffington worked two innings in relief of Moffat, with Cody Wernli and Dylan Schneider each tossing a shutout frame. Jordon West earned the win with a shutout ninth inning.
At the plate, UTA's offense was largely handcuffed by the starting pitching performances. Team Smith got a two-hit game from Josh Minjarez and David Renning, with Christian Hollie, Jakob Nunez and Phillip Childs collecting hits.
Freshman catcher Justin Marino, a native of Arlington, had two hits and a walk for Team Bocchi. Freshman infielder Boone Montgomery added two hits, including the go-ahead knock in the fifth inning to open the scoring. Johnson's walk-off hit in the ninth came after laying down a bunt single in the eighth inning.
Team Smith took the lead in the fifth inning, getting a leadoff double from Marino. After a sacrifice bunt and a strikeout for the second out, Montgomery fought off a 1-2 pitch into shallow centerfield for an early lead.
Team Bocchi answered in the sixth, getting a one-out single from Renning. After a failed pickoff attempt allowed Renning to motor to third with one out, Childs chopped an RBI groundout to short top score Renning.
