ARLINGTON, Texas -- Redshirt freshman right-hander Cody Wernli fanned seven over three innings to highlight game four of the UTA baseball fall world series, ending in a 4-4 tie on Wednesday afternoon at Clay Gould Ballpark.
A product of Allen High School in Allen, Texas, Wernli didn't allow an earned run over three innings, with seven of his nine outs coming via strikeout. He allowed just a hit over 54 pitches, walking two and surrendering one unearned run.
For Team Smith in the start, Carlos Tavera tossed 2.1 shutout innings, allowing four hits and a walk, striking out three. Ryan Buss, Andrew Gross, Daniel James and Tristan Tom each worked in relief, with James getting four outs without allowing any damage. Jordon West also worked three innings for Team Bocchi in relief, striking out three.
Team Bocchi was led offensively by multi-hit games from Phil Berthiaume, Easton Johnson, Justin Marino and Seth Ballenger. Omar Salinas and Ty Sawka added knocks. Zac Cook – who led off the third game of the series with a homer – had two hits to pace the Team Smith offense. Christian Hollie added two hits, with Noah Vaughan and Phillip Childs each collecting hits.
Game Five will conclude the series on Thursday at 3 p.m. CT at Clay Gould Ballpark.
