Dec. 16, 2009
ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington center fielder Michael Choice has been named a third team National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Pro-Line Preseason All-American, the organization announced Wednesday.
Choice, a junior from Arlington, Texas, is the first UTA player to earn preseason All-American honors since Michael Gardner was tabbed a third team NCBWA pick prior to the 2005 season.
Joining Choice as a preseason All-American from the Southland Conference was Southeastern Louisiana relief pitcher Chris Franklin (second team) and Sam Houston State's second baseman Braeden Riley (third team).
Choice is coming off his second stellar season at UT Arlington batting .413 with 64 runs, 93 hits, 11 home runs and 52 RBI as a sophomore in 2009. He finished fourth in the SLC in batting and ranked fifth in both hits and runs scored.
He is a two-time All-SLC selection and was the 2008 SLC Freshman of the Year. In 2009, Choice was tabbed second team American Baseball Coaches Association South Central All-Region. In addition, he was named to five Freshman All-American teams in 2008.
He spent last summer playing for the USA Baseball National Team (Collegiate) where he batted .350 with 13 runs, three doubles, three home runs and 13 RBI. He was the first player from UTA and the second player from the SLC to play for Team USA. Baseball America listed Choice as the No. 8 Major League Baseball Draft prospect off of last summer's Team USA squad.
Choice enters the 2010 season as the all-time UTA career batting leader (.396) and he also ranks 10th in career home runs (18) and third in career slugging (.604).
