SAN MARCOS, Texas – Karol Gruszecki led a balanced attack as UT Arlington raced past Texas State 91-74 Saturday afternoon at Strahan Coliseum.
The Mavericks improved to 8-6 overall and 3-2 in the Western Athletic Conference after a two-game road sweep against longtime rivals. UT Arlington, 6-2 on the road, won 75-67 at UTSA on Thursday.
"This road trip was exactly what we needed," UT Arlington coach Scott Cross said. "We were able to find our offense."
Gruszecki, a senior, knocked down seven 3-pointers and scored 23 to set career highs in both categories. All five starters scored in double figures for the Mavericks for the first time this season.
Kevin Butler added 15 points and Jordan Reves had 11. Brandon Edwards had his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Cameron Catlett chipped in 11 points and a season-high seven assists.
The Mavericks also scored a season high in points, surpassing the 81-47 victory over Houston Baptist on Dec. 13. UT Arlington shot 57.1 percent after shooting 57.8 percent at UTSA. The Mavs set a new season low for turnovers with six.
The Mavericks pulled away late in the second half to turn a close game into a rout. Texas State was hot from 3-point territory to start the second, cutting the UT Arlington lead to 54-50.
The Mavericks clamped down defensively and Gruszecki began knocking down 3-pointers to help UT Arlington pull away. Back-to-back treys from Gruszecki gave the Mavericks an 84-67 lead with just under six minutes to go.
The Mavericks started strong, especially from beyond the arc. Gruszecki's second 3-pointer gave UT Arlington an early 10-8 lead. Butler connected on another from deep for an 18-11 edge, as the Mavericks drilled four 3-pointers in the first six minutes.
UT Arlington kept the pressure coming at both ends, ripping off a 17-0 run to go up 38-17. The Bobcats made a push behind Joel Wright to close out the half, but the Mavericks took a 44-34 advantage into the locker room.
UT Arlington was shooting 53.1 percent at the break. Butler led the way with 10 points, Gruszecki scored nine, and Brandon Edwards and Jordan Reves had eight each. The Mavericks didn't commit a turnover for the first 20 minutes.
Wright had 16 at the half for Texas State, which shot 51.9 percent. Wright finished with 24 points.
The Mavericks return to College Park Center for a two-game WAC homestand. UT Arlington faces Seattle on Thursday, Jan. 17 and Idaho on Saturday, Jan. 19. Both games are at 7 p.m.
