POSTGAME QUOTES

UTA Head Coach Scott Cross
“We haven’t won on the road in a while and, since before the Creighton game, we hadn’t been ahead on the road. So, it was beautiful to win a game like this. Obviously, when your shots are falling it covers a multitude of sins. But, I think it started on the defensive end. We talked about it before the game. We had to change our identity. Our identity has been being tough, rebounding. We worked too hard for this throughout the offseason and boot camp. That’s what we do. To come out and play soft, get whooped on the boards and give up 50 percent from the field is not who we are. So, I felt like the guys made a concentrated effort to be much better defensively. You can see hands up. We got a lot of deflections. We were more vocal. I thought our guys were scrambling around. When you get stops, it is a lot easier to shoot the basketball. You can play looser and free. We play faster and a lot more free when we get stops. We shot about as good as we possibly can. I haven’t seen us shoot the ball this well since the Oklahoma exhibition game. I’m proud of the guys. I felt like we took good shots the majority of the game. That’s a big part of it as well. It was great to one on the road like this.

“I talked before the game that there has only been one or two possessions that stick out in my head. Most notably, at the BYU when there was a loose ball and 7-foot-one Link (Kabadyundi) runs halfway down the court and dives on the floor. That changed our whole defensive identity and the course of the game. I think he did that tonight when he chased that one down. He plays so hard. I love the character he embodies and the toughness. It was exciting that we was able to go tear the rim down on the other end of the floor. Johnny (Hamilton) was awesome, as well. At the five position, we got a ton of production. Really, it was a great all around team performance. (Nathan Hawkins) has seven assists and made everybody else better. Nate is a guy that is a third guy that can create offense for us. Erick (Neal) can pass it so well. Hervey can pass it. Nate has that ability, too. He was breaking guys down off the dribble and getting g shots for other guys.”
