JONESBORO, Ark. -- The UT Arlington men's basketball team enjoyed one of its finest overall performances of the season tonight in a convincing 97-71 Sun Belt Conference victory over host Arkansas State in First National Bank Arena.
All nine UTA players who saw action scored in the game as the Mavericks snapped a 4-game road losing streak that dated back to mid-December. UTA improved to 12-7 overall and 3-3 in the Sun Belt. Arkansas State fell to 6-13, 1-5.
The Mavericks return to action Thursday when they host league-leading Louisiana in a 7:15 p.m. contest in College Park Center. Tickets are available online at UTATickets.com or by calling the UTA Box Office during weekday business hours at (817) 272-9595.
UTA's point total in the game marked the second-highest ever for a Maverick side in the 57-game series between the two programs and the highest since a 99-100 double-overtime setback on Feb. 16, 1965 in Arlington.
Four of UTA's five starters scored in double figures, led by grad transfer center Johnny Hamilton's 19 points and game-high eight rebounds. The Rio Claro, Trinidad native shot 7-of-9 from the field and blocked four shots.
Point guard Erick Neal chipped-in 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, which included a 4-of-6 performance from behind the 3-point arc, while Nathan Hawkins and Kaelon Wilson added 15 points apiece. Hawkins, a UTA grad student from Garland, also distributed a career-best seven assists.
Deven Simms was the only Arkansas State player to score in double figures with 14 points as the UTA defense limited the Red Wolves to just 39.4 percent shooting from the field and 21.1 percent from 3-point range.
The Mavericks enjoyed a solid first half performance that included 67 percent shooting from the field and an impressive 59 percent from the 3-point arc. UTA scored a season-best 54 first half points to set an arena record for an A-State opponent.
In the second half, the Mavericks extended their lead to a game-high 37 points with 7:19 left before settling for the final 26-point advantage.
