MBB: Mavericks Cruise Past Warhawks

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The UTA men's basketball's defense held ULM to under 35-percent shooting from the field and Kevin Hervey charted 21 points, leading the Mavericks to a 71-55 win over the Warhawks, on Saturday evening at College Park Center.

UTA (13-8, 4-4 Sun Belt Conference) rode a strong defensive effort to the win over ULM (7-11, 1-6 Sun Belt) and have now won four of its last six games in January. The Mavs dominated throughout the game, owning a lead as large as 18 in the final seconds of the win.

UTA held ULM to 31 percent shooting from the field, while owning dominating margins in rebounds (49-33), bench points (23-4), points off turnovers (21-5) and points in the paint (28-6).

LEADING THE MAVS
A product of Arlington's Bowie High School, Hervey had 21 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Davion Turner finished a point shy of his career high, totaling 10 points and two rebounds. Senior guard Erick Neal had nine points and eight assists, with senior Kaelon Wilson owning eight points and three rebounds. Johnny Hamilton had six points and a team-leading 11 rebounds, with Mairega Clarke adding seven points and three rebounds.

The Mavs will return to action on Thursday at Georgia State, with tipoff slated for 6:15 p.m. CT with the game broadcast live on ESPN3.com.

FIRST HALF
The Mavs rolled out of the game hot, getting a jumper from Hamilton to start the scoring, with Hervey sinking a triple and getting a basket at the rim to give the Mavs a 7-0 lead. Hamilton's dunk and a pair of free throws from Hervey lifted UTA to an 11-4 lead. ULM then went on an 8-0 run to take a 12-11 lead with 15 minutes left with Wilson getting the Mavs back on top with a basket in the paint.

With the game tied at 15, Davion Turner was found by Neal in transition to get the Mavs back on top. Turner then hauled in the defensive rebound and found Neal in transition at the wing for a triple, forcing a ULM timeout. Out of the break, Turner lined up a three in the corner on an assist from Clarke for a 23-18 lead. Link Kabadyundi sank a basket in the paint as the Mavs took a 25-18 lead into the under eight-minute media timeout. The Mavs rolled on a 10-0 run to take a 33-18 lead, holding ULM scoreless for nearly five minutes of game action. The Warhawks fought back to cut the lead to eight but the Mavs finished the half with back-to-back triples from Turner and Hervey to take a 42-27 lead into the break.

SECOND HALF
ULM opened the scoring with a triple in the second half and cut the lead to single digits with a second 3-pointer to open the period. After Travis Munnings' three pointer cut the lead to 42-38, Hervey completed an and-one to stretch the lead back to seven. After a defensive stop, Hervey drilled two more from the charity stripe to take the lead to nine. Clarke pushed the lead to double-digits with a jumper and free throws from Neal and a basket in the paint from Kabadyundi took UTA to a 53-43 lead with 10 minutes left. Wilson sank a three and Turner hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 58-46 with eight minutes left. Hervey extended the lead to 14 with a jumper to take a 60-46 lead. Wilson followed with a triple to take the lead to 63-48 in the closing five minutes. A Hervey tip in and two free throws from Clarke gave UTA a 67-53 lead after the under four-minute media timeout.
