Feb. 5, 2008 ARLINGTON, Texas - - The UT Arlington men's basketball team hit the boards Tuesday night against UT Pan American and came away with a 71-68 non-conference victory at Texas Hall. Senior forward Larry Posey had 15 points and 10 rebounds. Senior guard Rod Epps had a career-high nine rebounds. Posey's 10th rebound turned out to be the biggest of the night for the Mavericks (16-13), who stopped the Broncs (15-6) in the game's final seconds to secure the win. UT Pan American had a chance to move ahead with a 3-pointer or tie with a field goal with 26 seconds left and the ball. The Broncs got an open shot, but the ball bounced high off the rim. Posey out-jumped two defenders to grab the rebound. He threw ahead to Cardell Hunter, who passed to Rog'er Guignard for a layup and the 71-67 advantage. The victory is the 15th for UTA, which ties for the seventh-most victories in school history. Posey recorded his second double-double of the season. "It was a big win because we really needed to get back in the win column, and UT Pan Am has a good basketball team," UTA coach Scott Cross said. "We played hard and shot the ball well, and most importantly, we were able to do it in front of our home crowd and give our students and fans something to cheer about." UT Arlington shot 52 percent (26-for-50) from the field, led by Rog'er Guignard's 9-for-16 performance. Junior forward Anthony Vereen added 13 points on 6 of 10 shooting. The Mavericks won despite foul trouble as second-leading scorer Jermaine Griffin played just 10 minutes and fouled out late in the second half.
UT Pan American shot 48 percent, but the Mavericks won the battle on the boards, 34-23. Zach Trader led the Broncs with 21 points. The Mavericks return to Southland Conference action with a 4 p.m. game Saturday at Texas Hall against Texas State-San Marcos. |
