Opening thoughts on the win: “This was an awesome all-around game, most memorable game of the year for so many reasons. Especially for Johnny Hamilton, as he broke the single-season block record and the (pregame marriage) proposal. I’ve been in a similar situation so I know how important that game is when you do something like that. And he played extremely well, really all of our guys defended extremely well with the exception of about 8 minutes. We really moved the ball offensively throughout the first half, we had 14 assists on 16 of our made baskets. That just shows you how unselfish the guys were playing. And for me, that’s what we have to do to be successful. We have to trust each other, move the ball, and have player movement and the guys bought in and they went out and executed. This is up there with one of the best wins of the season by far. And they’ve put two of the best games of the season back-to-back in beating the second and third best teams in the league. We’re playing our best basketball right now and we have to carry it over to the road. So I’m very very happy with how things went today.”
On the duo of Kevin Hervey and Erick Neal: “Over a 4-year period I don’t think there has been a better 1-2 punch than those guys. What makes them special is their passing ability and ability to get shots for their teammates but also their ability to score the basketball. Hervey’s ability to post up. They are as good of players as I’ve ever coached. I think one win away from tying the record for most wins for a 4-year period in program history. So that’s extra motivation for them heading into Texas State this week and heading into the conference tournament.”
On the team rounding into form, specifically Nathan Hawkins and Erick Neal tonight: “Nathan is another guy who is a fantastic passer. Him, Kevin, and Erick are the guys that can really dissect you apart, that’s awesome that he had 6 assists tonight. Then 10 rebounds with Erick, the smallest guy on the floor has a double-double. That tells you about his competitiveness. He’s one of the most competitive kids I’ve ever coached for sure.”
