ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington ran its Western Athletic Conference winning streak to five games by racing past San Jose State 81-74 Thursday night at College Park Center .
The Mavericks improved to 16-10 overall and 10-5 in the WAC with the season sweep of the Spartans. Jordan Reves came up a rebound short of his seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and nine rebounds, while Jamel Outler paced UT Arlington with 15 points.
“It wasn’t our best defensive game but when you have 21 assist and seven turnovers you have a good chance of winning basketball games,” UT Arlington coach Scott Cross said. “When they hit shots like they did tonight it makes our defense so much smoother.”
UT Arlington outscored San Jose State 18-2 in fastbreak points and enjoyed a 32-24 edge in points in the paint.
A 12-3 run to finish out the first half gave UT Arlington a lead that it would not relinquish. Greg Gainey opened the spurt with a monster dunk before Outler would hit the first of four UTA 3-pointers in the half.
“We don’t have a set starting five like we did last year,” Cross said. “Every single one of these guys that played is capable of being a starter. It’s great to see when your whole team scores.”
The Mavericks forced the Spartans into 12 first half turnovers. Karol Gruszecki scored 12 of his 14 points in the first half points to lead all scorers at the break on 5-8 shooting, including two 3-pointers. The Spartans (9-17, 3-12) were down 39-30 at the break.
The Mavericks play their last home game of the regular season Saturday night at 7 p.m. The finale is also Senior Night, with Jordan Reves, Cameron Catlett, Kevin Butler and Karol Gruszecki being honored.
