The UT Arlington Mavericks used a 21-2 run late in the first half to pull away from Texas A&M-Commerce, 85-62, in an exhibition game at Texas Hall Thursday night.
Seven Mavericks scored in double figures for UT Arlington. Sophomore forward Tommy Moffitt led with 19 points. Larry Posey (13), Rod Epps (11), Brandon Long (12), Rod Epps (11), Rog'er Guignard (11) and Jermaine Griffin (10) all had double figures in the balanced attack.
Texas A&M-Commerce, from the Division II Lone Star Conference, was led by former A&M-Corpus Christi starting forward Scooby Johnson with 18 points. Brent Stanton scored seven of his 11 points in the second half and Lance Jackson added 10.
"I thought we came out with good intensity and our bench did a good job of continuing the intensity once they got on the floor," said UT Arlington Head Men's Basketball Coach Scott Cross said. "We did a good job rebounding on the offensive end and the fact we had 11 steals tell me we were very aggressive, and I like that. We converted those rebounds and steals into easy points and set the tempo for the game."
The Mavericks defense set the tone early, limiting TAMUCC to nine points in the first 11 minutes of the game and led 31-9 after a Posey jumper with 8:53 left in the first half. Leading 31-16, three straight 3-pointers - two by Guignard and another by Long - stretched the lead to 40-16. Moffitt's jumper in the final minute of the half made it 50-18.
UT Arlington opens the 2007-08 season Monday, Nov. 12, when they host UC Riverside at 7:30 p.m. The game will follow the UT Arlington women-Pittsburg State game at 5 p.m.
