Rice 49, UT Arlington 69
Wednesday, November 29, 2017 - College Park Center
UTA Head Coach Scott Cross
On The Game: "I thought this was one of our better performances if you look at everything combined. We weren't quite efficient offensively, but I thought we did a great job defensively. We did a solid job rebounding the basketball. I thought we played unselfishly. They run a match-up zone which is a little unique to attack. I was pretty pleased with the way our guys performed."
On Game's Foul Calls against UTA: "It seemed like they were little touch-fouls. You can't focus on the officials. You just have to play the game and focus on the things you can control. That's what we tell our guys, but they have to learn hot to play without fouling."
On Kevin Hervey: "Kevin and Johnny (Hamilton) were very efficient. They scored just about everything. He (Hervey) shot the ball well, rebounded, and defended. I gave him the day off when we played UT Dallas. My message was whether we do that (give him the day off) in the future based upon how he performed. He definitely passed the test. If they defend well in practice and not in the game, it doesn't really do us much good. That extra rest definitely gave him a boost."
On DJ Bryant: "He's still playing with an injured ankle. Achilles is bothering him, but it was nice to see him shoot with confidence. He's a solid point guard. It's great for him to finally experience a little bit of success."
On UTA's upcoming home game against North Texas: "I think they're going to play extremely hard. Every time we play a rivalry game, both teams are going to be pumped for it. They (North Texas) are probably going to have an edge to them. Our guys are going to have to be ready. They are well-coached and good defensively so we're going to have to come out and be ready defensively."
Senior Forward Kevin Hervey
On Game Performance: "We had a great overall team performance. We put emphasis on defense this game. I think collectively as a team we strapped down and we guarded."
On Expectations of The Mav's against North Texas Game: "We are just going to try and guard like we did tonight. This is probably our best defensive effort we had all season long. No matter who the opponent is, we look at them all the same. We aren't scared of anybody. We look forward to playing whoever is on the schedule."
On Teammate DJ Bryant: "DJ's probably the hardest worker on our team. He's in the gym every single day, hours upon hours getting thousands and thousands of shots in. I try to encourage him to shoot the ball. He's a team player and that's what I love about him. Proud of him."
On Teammate Julian Harris: "We been missing Julian all season. He's a tough guy. He does all the little things and a great defender. We need him really bad. He's a star in his role, does everything he supposed to do, does everything the right way. He's a stand-up guy."
On Teammate Johnny Hamilton's impact on the team: "He's a superb rim protector. We can take more risks going for steals. He allows us to play more aggressively on the perimeter because he's down there and he's protecting the rim."
Rice Head Coach Scott Pera
Summary on how his team played: "I thought we fought really hard defensively. I was really proud of our guys effort. To hold that team to under 70 points at home and 39 percent shooting and 8 for 36 from the three was outstanding. Obviously we struggled with scoring, they're a very good team, very well coached, Coach Cross has done a tremendous job with the program. With the maturity they have and the player that Hervey is, I think they are going to have a tremendous year."
What to learn after this game: "You got to work to get better. You got to work on the mistakes, you got to watch the tape. The guys have to watch the tape and us as staff have to watch the tape and figure out how to make them and help them get better, and that's the goal right there since day one and that will not change."
