AUSTIN, Texas – A barrage of 3-pointers doomed UT Arlington in Saturday afternoon's 70-54 loss to the Texas Longhorns at the Erwin Center.
The Mavericks dropped to 3-2 on the season and suffered their first road loss. Texas (5-3) drilled a season-high 13 shots from beyond the arc in improving to 8-0 all-time against UT Arlington. The previous high for 3-pointers against the Mavs this season was nine by Samford on Nov. 24.
Senior center Jordan Reves led UT Arlington with 15 points and added 10 rebounds. Junior forward Brandon Edwards pulled down 13 rebounds. Texas guard Julian Lewis paced the Longhorns with 18 points, hitting six 3-pointers along the way.
UT Arlington spent much of the nonconference game down by double figures, but open looks were hard to come by early in a matchup of two of the top defensive teams in the country. The shot clock routinely trickled down into single digits before either side could offer up an attempt as the game warmed up.
"I was very disappointed with our effort in the first half," UT Arlington coach Scott Cross said.
Turnovers soon became a problem for the Mavericks, as Texas opened up a 17-7 lead midway through the first half. The Longhorns turned those extra possessions into points as Cross tried different personnel groups in an effort to manufacture momentum.
Texas' lead grew to 20 (38-18) going into locker room, as the Longhorns finished the opening half with an 11-1 run. UT Arlington shot just 25.9 percent (7-27) and had nine turnovers at the break, while UT heated up to shoot 52 percent (13-25).
Reves and senior guard Cameron Catlett had four points each for UTA in the first half. Lewis and Sheldon McClellan each had nine points for Texas.
The Mavericks finished with 19 turnovers. Texas blocked nine shots.
UT Arlington concludes its stretch of four consecutive road games Monday night at UT Pan Am. The Mavericks and Broncos tip at 7 p.m. and the game can be heard in the DFW Metroplex on Soul 730 AM. UTA is 3-1 on the road this season.
