STILLWATER, Okla. - UT Arlington fell to 5-3 after Wednesday night's 69-44 loss to No. 24 Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena.
The Mavericks have another sizable break before hitting the court again. UT Arlington opens its first season in the Western Athletic Conference against New Mexico State on Dec. 29 at College Park Center.
Markel Brown scored 17 to lead the 9-1 Cowboys, who took control of contest early and cruised to the victory. Oklahoma State holds an 11-1 all-time lead in the series against UTA.
The Mavericks shot only 39.1 percent (18-46) and committed a season-high 31 turnovers. The previous high was 22 in the season opener at CSU Bakersfield.
"It's unbelievable," UT Arlington coach Scott Cross said of the turnovers. "I'm at a loss for words."
The Mavericks struggled taking care of the ball early, turning it over six times in the first five minutes. Oklahoma State took advantage of those extra possessions to take a 13-3 lead with nine points coming on three 3-pointers.
The Cowboys kept pouring it on as UT Arlington struggled to make a shot. OSU opened up as much as a 28-10 lead before the Mavericks settled down and made a 7-0 run.
A 3-pointer from Butler, and consecutive scores in the paint by Reves and senior guard Cameron Catlett cut the OSU edge to 28-17. The Cowboys responded with a 9-0 run to take a 36-17 lead into halftime.
Butler had eight points for the Mavericks in the first half. UTA suffered 20 turnovers and shot just 30.4 percent (7-23) over the first 20 minutes. Oklahoma State shot 50 percent (14-28) and was led by Brown's 13 points.
