ARLINGTON, Texas -- Behind the 31st career double-double from senior Kevin Hervey, UTA men's basketball posted a 77-56 win over Cal Poly, on Thursday night at College Park Center.
The defending Sun Belt Conference Male Athlete of the Year, Hervey helped spur the Mavs to the win over Cal Poly (4-9). After a tight first half that ended with UTA leading 28-25, the Mavs used a furious run to open the second period to build a double-digit lead and coast to the win.
UTA (9-4) finished the game owning advantages in rebounding (39-36), second-chance points (11-8), bench points (20-8) and points in the paint (32-12). UTA held Cal Poly to 33 percent shooting from the field and finished shooting at a 43 percent clip.
UTA's win marks its second in the last three games, as the Mavs have faced a rugged non-conference schedule, earning a 20-point win at UTRGV before suffering a loss at No. 25 Creighton on Monday night.
LEADING THE MAVS
A native of Arlington, Texas, Hervey moved into fourth place on the all-time scoring list for the Mavs, owning 25 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year and the UTA record 31st of his career. He connected on 10 of 18 shots from the field, including five of seven attempts from behind the arc.
Senior point guard Erick Neal added nine points, seven assists and two rebounds over 27 minutes. The Mavs also got a double-figure scoring effort from senior Kaelon Wilson, who added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists. The Mavs will return to action on Friday, Dec. 29 with the conference lidlifter at Coastal Carolina. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. CT.
Hervey opened the scoring as the teams traded baskets, with Wilson sinking a pair of free throws to take a 4-2 lead. Neal's first triple of the game lifted the Mavs to a 6-5 lead after just six minutes in the first stanza. After they started 1 for the first 11, Cal Polly spurted off on a 9-0 run behind a trio of threes to take a 14-6 lead with 10 minutes left. Hervey extended the run to 12-0 behind a tip-in and triple from the wing, giving UTA an 18-14 lead with five minutes remaining. After the Mustangs regained the lead, Davion Turner found Hervey at the rim in transition to even it at 21. Hervey's second triple of the game, fired from the wing in transition, saw UTA take a 26-23 lead. After CP sank a pair of free throws, Neal found Hamilton at the rim for an alley-oop to send the game to half with the Mavs leading 28-25.
