UT Arlington 77, Cal Poly 56
Thursday, December 21, 2017 – Arlington, Texas
UTA Head Coach Scott Cross
"This is one of those games where first half we couldn’t hit anything. I think our guys were stressing, just trying too hard to score the basketball. But, this is what we’ve been preaching all along, ‘play great defense and you can win ugly games.’ Overall, I was pleased. We didn’t have the best offensive game in the world, but I saw a lot of things that I liked. I’m proud of our guys."
On what he told the team at halftime:
"I told them for the most part, I felt like we were playing the right way. We were playing with speed. I told them they just needed to relax…they were putting too much pressure on themselves, they were stressing about it. You know the harder you try offensively, the harder it becomes. You just have to play the game the way it’s supposed to played. It’s almost like you should be playing like you’re at the park."
On Kevin Hervey and Kaelon Wilson’s recent high numbers:
"They’re both go-to guys. Kevin can do everything. Kaelon is an unbelievable driver, strong finisher. He’s a guy that worked relentlessly on his jump shot. He’s become one of our best three-point shooters. They are two of our best scoring options.”
On heading into Sun Belt Conference games:
"We know it’s going to be a blood bath. The good thing about it is when you defend like this, you have a chance. You have to defend, you have to rebound and if you can do those two things, I think we will be in a lot of ball games. There are 5 or 6 teams that could possibly win the championships."
Maverick’s Senior Forward, No. 25, Kevin Hervey
"I think we played well as a collective unit. This is one of our better defensive games. I like the effort that all of our guys played."
On His Team:
"We’re a resilient bunch. We lost three of our last four. We just try to focus on defense. Control things that you can control."
On Halftime Comeback:
"Offensively we weren’t hitting shots. We just couldn’t hit very many of them. I think defensively, we played well in the first half and we kept that up."
On his individual performance:
"I appreciate Coach. He runs a lot of sets for me. I just try to play off my teammates. They do a great job of penetrating. A lot of shops I get are lay-ups or open threes, that’s credit to them for allowing me to get open off of their aggressiveness."
On Upcoming Conference Games:
"It’s going to be a test. Every conference game is real gritty. I think our team has a lot of toughness that we haven’t displayed to the fullest yet. I think conference will be a grind."
