UT Arlington is looking for a 2-0 league start in its final season in the Southland Conference. Nicholls State visits Saturday night for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Texas Hall.

The Mavericks got off to a strong start in SLC play with Wednesday's 85-46 victory over Southeastern Louisiana. The 39-point margin of victory was the largest for the season and marked the fifth win of at least 27 points this season. UTA is also on a season-long four game winning streak and is receiving votes in the Mid-Major poll.

Kevin Butler and LaMarcus Redd each scored 16 points against SLU, as the Mavericks used a 41-10 run to take control of the game. The Lions were held to 36.4-percent shooting and scored 20 points in the second half.

"It was a great opener," UTA head coach Scott Cross said. "Our guys really buckled down. I think our zone was really good for us in the second half. Our guys did a great job of getting some stops."

The Mavericks have held their opponents to an average of 60.8 points on 39.5-percent shooting during the four-game winning streak. The average margin of victory has been 18 points.

"We take pride in our defense," Cross added. "If we can hold them to zero points, we want to hold them to zero points. We don't want to run up the score offensively, but defensively if we can pitch a shutout, we want to pitch a shutout. "

LaMarcus Reed leads the Mavericks in scoring at 14.2 points per game and has scored in double figures 11 times while Bo Ingram has averaged over 15.6 points a contest over the last five. Kevin Butler is averaging 10.6 points and 5.9 rebounds on the season, while Jordan Reeves is averaging of 9.6 points and 8.4 rebounds over the last four games.

"I love our team," Cross said. "We just have to keep it going."

UTA leads the series against Nicholls 23-19, which includes an 11-8 series advantage in games played in Arlington. The Colonels have won three consecutive in the series, including a 66-48 last season in Thibodaux. UTA last beat Nicholls in Arlington 69-60 on Jan. 17, 2008

Nicholls lost its Southland opener 91-50 to UTA. Trevon Lewis is the Colonels' leading scorer at 13.6 points per game.
