The Texas-Arlington men's basketball team opens the SLC home schedule against Northwestern State. Tip-off will follow the UTA-NSU women's game at approximately 8 p.m.

CATCHING THE GAME:The game will be broadcast on UTA Radio, the University's on-line campus radio station. Connect on www.radio.uta.edu or Comcast Cable Channel 76 in Arlington. UTA Radio sports director, Michael Ray, will provide the play-by-play coverage.

THE SERIES: UTA leads the series 24-15. UTA has won the past three meetings and 10 of the past 14 dating back to the 1997-98 season. UTA leads in SLC games played, 21-11 and has won 13 of 19 games played at Texas Hall.

ABOUT THE SOUTHEASTERN LOUISIANA GAME: Southeastern Louisiana went on a 29-8 run over a 13:26 span in the second half and turned a one point Texas-Arlington lead into a 57-41 victory Jan. 8.

Jonathan Walker led four Lions in double figures with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He was joined by Nate Lofton and Neil Berry with 11 and Jonathan Patton with 10. Ricky Woods added 11 rebounds.

UTA's starting backcourt of Jarrett Howell, Brady Dawkins and Stephen Floyd combined for just two points on 1-of-8 from the field. As a team, the Mavs shot just 13-for-36 (.361) from the field and only 5-for-22 (.227) in the second half.

UTA was led offensively by Jermaine Griffin who was the only player in double figures with 13 points. He also added at team-best nine rebounds. Thomas was held to just eight points, all in the first half, marking the first time Thomas was held under double digits all season.

SHARING THE `ROCK': Junior guard Brady Dawkins, who led the Mavs with 65 assists in 28 games a year ago, is ranked 43rd nationally at 5.40 assists per game.

His assist total has dwindled in the last seven games. After a season-high 11 against Texas Wesleyan on Nov. 30, Dawkins has steadily declined with seven versus San Diego, six at Texas, five against Texas-Tyler, three at South Florida and one against New Mexico. He recorded three at Nicholls State on Jan. 6.

Dawkins made a few fans in Wyoming with his long-range 3-pointers. The 5-foot-10 Dawkins left the crowd "ooohing and aaahing" with a shooting clinic, nailing a career-best five treys and a career-high 15 points in an 86-79 loss to Wyoming on Nov. Nov. 27.

UTA dished out a season-high 21 assists in the 77-72 win against Texas Wesleyan on Nov. 30.

5 WILL GET YOU 10: It has been balance that has UTA coaches smiling. The Mavericks had five players score in double figures three times this season.

In the 92-83 win over San Diego on Dec. 4, Steven Thomas led the game with 26 points. Jarrett Howell (20), Stephen Floyd (18), Jermaine Griffin (12) and Brady Dawkins (10) combined for 86 of the team's 92 points.

In an 88-67 win over New Mexico State, Thomas and Howell had 12 points each by halftime. Thomas finished with 16 and Howell with 14. Larry Posey scored 13 of his career-high 15 in the second half. Fellow freshman Griffin had 11 and sophomore Floyd added 10.

Against UW, Griffin (16), Dawkins (15), Howell (12), Thomas (11) and Posey (11) all scored double figures.

LAYING IT ON THE LINE UTA hit 70 percent or better for the eighth time in the last 10 games with a 19-of-26 effort (73.1%) at Nicholls State on Jan. 6 and 14-of-20 (70.0) at Southeastern Louisiana. UTA has five players hitting 70.0 percent or better from the foul line this season -- Jarrett Howell (84.0), Stephen Floyd (83.3), Steven Thomas (78.4) Brady Dawkins (75.0) and Baron Sauls (71.4). Barring any injury, Thomas will move into second place on the all-time free throw made list at UTA this season. He has 270 career free throws and trails Eddie Stallings (1960-64) by 27 free throws for second place all-time.

YOUNG GUNS Prior to the start of the 2004-05 season, recruiting services proclaimed the UTA Class of 2004 as one of the best in school history.

Maybe they were right.

Through nine games, the UTA version of the "Fab Five" group of freshmen Larry Posey (photo right), Baron Sauls, Rodrick Epps, Jermaine Griffin and Myles Guidry have combined to average 26.4 points, 10.9 rebounds per game. Posey became the first true freshman during Eddie McCarter's tenure to score double figures in his college debut with 10 points at TCU. One night later, Griffin recorded his first double-double with 21 points and 14 rebounds in a 13-point win over UT-Permian Basin.

THOMAS TAKES LEADERSHIP ROLE:Junior Steven Thomas has gotten off to a quick start for his claim to be the Southland Conference Player of the Year this season.

Defenses have keyed on Thomas after ranking fifth in the nation in field goals percentage midway through December. He had a personal-best 14 rebounds against Nicholls State on Jan. 6.

Thomas' 16 made free throws against San Diego matches his own personal best and is tied for fifth on the all-time single mark at UTA. Thomas needs 150 points to move into the school's top 25 career scoring list. He ranks sixth on the career free throws made list with 266. He passed Mike Nau (1964-67) during the Mavs 76-65 win at Nicholls State. He can move into the top five with two to surpass Leonard Wilson (1990-93) and the top three with 14. The career leader is Paul Renfro (396) who set the record in 1980.

Thomas has been a steady force, scoring in double figures every game and posting five double-doubles this season, including a 32-point, 11-rebound effort against Texas Tyler on Dec. 22.

ABOUT NORTHWESTERN STATE: Southeastern Louisiana has won three of its past four games, including a 60-56 win versus Lamar on Jan. 5.

Northwestern State has won three straight games, including the league opener at Stephen F. Austin (69-63) and Saturday against Texas-San Antonio (71-66). NWSU has just one senior on this season roster -- guard Tremaine Hancock. Picked to win the league in the pre-season poll by the SLC coaches, Northwestern State has been led by pre-season all-SLC picks Jermaine Wallace, Clifton Lee and Byron Allen. Combined they are averaging 24.2 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
