Dear UTA fans,
With conference play just underway and two long road trips behind us, our team is back home at Texas Hall, and I wanted to take a minute before our current home stand to let everybody know how much our staff and the players have appreciated the support so far.
The turnout for our road game at TCU last month was probably the best road crowd we've had since I have been here as a player and coach over the past decade. Unfortunately, we didn't win the game, but it shows that Mavericks can unite for a big game and Mavericks certainly care about this basketball team. Our players notice it, and it makes them want to work even harder to bring a championship to Arlington.
Although there were no official numbers released, it sure appeared to me that we drew more fans than TCU did - even though it was in their arena. That was awesome to see from the from the bench.
We haven't started the conference season as well as we would have liked to - we have lost two straight conference games on the road. Our coaches and players have been putting in some long hours over the past few days to get things turned around.
But remember this: At Texas Hall, we're still undefeated in eight games. In fact, we have a 14-game home win streak dating back to last season.
Our home crowds are a huge reason for that.
As a former player here at UTA, I know what it means when Texas Hall crowds are big and loud. It makes you dive even harder for a loose ball and defend with more intensity.
Our next game is against a very tough Nicholls State squad on Thursday night at 7 p.m., and we'll need all the support we can get from students, faculty, staff and all of our fans in Dallas-Fort Worth in order to get our season headed back in the right direction.
Students are back in school, and the university has announced that this game is "Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night." All faculty and staff get free admission to the game. As always, students get in free.
There is still plenty to play for this season. The year isn't even half over - a Southland Conference championship is still very much within our reach - which is why I'm writing this letter to personally invite Maverick fans to Texas Hall this Thursday for our conference home opener.
Thanks very much for your support so far, and I hope to see you at Texas Hall.
It's a very important game for us, and we'll need your help.
