All Smiles - On and Off The Court

Story By UTA Public Relations Student Alexandria Kerr

ARLINGTON, Texas - Apparently, the UT Arlington men's basketball program isn't big enough two have two Scotts - head coach Scott Cross and junior Scott Muirhead.

As most UTA basketball fans know, Muirhead now replies to the name Bill.

Muirhead is from Ennis, a small town located just outside of nearby Waxahachie, where he graduated in 2015 from Ennis High School. He earned first-team All-District honors during his junior year and was named district Newcomer of the Year.

"At the age of 10, I kept getting beat in knockout," said Muirhead. "If it wasn't for the constant support and motivation from my father, I wouldn't be the player I am today."

When it came to deciding whether or not Muirhead wanted to continue his basketball career after high school, he decided to attend UTA for the opportunity to try out for the Mavs. Muirhead earned a spot on the team as a walk-on his freshman year.

Unexpectedly, he also received a new name.

"Now, as everyone always asks, what is the story of how I got the name Bill," said Muirhead. "Well, it all started with a team trip to Whataburger. I stepped way and my teammates ordered for me. Coach Cross mentioned they need to 'change Scott's name' so they don't get their orders confused.

"Without telling me, they shout the name "Bill" as my order was ready. I gave a blank stare to my teammates as they were all telling me that's my name. From that night on I was no longer Scott, but Bill."

After not playing in a game as a freshman, Muirhead earned a redshirt season and gained an additional season of eligibility. Last season, he earned Sun Belt Conference Academic Honor Roll honors.

Muirhead is one of the program's most popular players, and one of the happiest.

"There is not a moment on or off the court you won't catch 'Bill' without a big old smile on his face," said Cross.

Muirhead is set to graduate with a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting in the spring of 2019. No doubt, Bill's future will shine just as bright as his pearly whites.
