ANTHONY VEREEN NAMED SOUTHLAND CONFERENCE CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Feb. 16, 2009
ARLINGTON, Tx. - UT Arlington forward Anthony Vereen was named the Southland Conference's Men's Co-Player of the Week along with Nicholls State forward Ryan Bathie, the league office announced Monday. It is the second time each player has won the honor this season
Vereen led UTA to a pair of wins last week against McNeese State and UTSA, averaging 21 points and 8.5 rebounds. The senior from Houston, Texas, led the Mavericks with team-highs of 21 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season vs. McNeese State. In that game, he scored five points, including his second 3-pointer of the game, to help hold off the Cowboys after they had cut into UTA's lead late in the game. In the two-point win over UTSA, Vereen made 7-of-9 free throws in the second half, including two free throws that gave the Mavericks a lead they would not give up. He made 14-of-19 field goals (74 percent) and was 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the line.
Bathie was the Colonels' leading scorer this week, averaging 21.0 points in wins over Sam Houston State and Southeastern Louisiana.
UT Arlington is 13-10 overall and 6-4 and tied for third in the West Division. The Mavericks return to action Wednesday at Southeastern Louisiana.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
