NEW ORLEANS, La. -- UT Arlington senior Erick Neal earned Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week honors after leading the Mavericks to a pair of important victories last weekend in College Park Center.
Neal, a native of Dallas, Texas, averaged 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and 7.5 assists, while shooting .619 from the field and an eye-popping .643 from behind the 3-point arc. The Mavericks defeated Georgia State 83-63 Thursday evening, then knocked-off Sun Belt runner-up Georgia State 89-81 on Saturday afternoon. Against the Panthers on Saturday, the final home game for the program's eight seniors, Neal fell just shy of his third career triple-double by scoring 24 points to go with 10 rebounds and 7 assists. He went 7-of-9 from the field and 7-of-8 from behind the 3-point arc.
Neal heads into the team's final game of the regular season Friday at Texas State as the program's all-time career leader in assists and 3-point attempts. He owns three of the top four single season assist totals, is second in 3-pointers and will conclude his career at UTA as the third-leading all-time scorer.
The Mavericks look to clinch a spot among the top four in the league standings Friday in their 6 p.m. contest at Texas State. The top four finishers earn a first round bye at next week's Sun Belt Championships at Lakefront Arena. At 18-12 overall and 9-8 in league play, a win would guarantee UTA no worse than fourth place finish in the Sun Belt.
The Sun Belt Conference Championships are scheduled for March 7-11. Tickets in UTA seating areas are available through the UTA Box Office by calling (817) 272-9595. Every game will be streamed live by ESPN3 via WatchESPN.com and the popular WatchESPN app, while Voice of the Mavericks Josh Sours will present a live radio broadcast throughout the D-FW Metroplex on KEXB 620 AM and via TuneIn.
