MBB: Cross says Mavs need your support in CIT
March 18, 2013
Dear UT Arlington Fans,
On February 6th, I wrote you a letter telling you about my vision for the program and asked that you come support us by attending our remaining six home games. We won five of those six home games, and you were a big reason why. In our last home game against Utah State, we had nearly 5,000 people in attendance and the atmosphere was absolutely amazing!
Many of you followed us during the WAC Tournament where we played some of our best basketball of the year. We opened the first round by beating Utah State 83-78. Utah State has an unbelievable basketball program, is extremely well-coached, and has won 21 games on the year. YOUR UT ARLINGTON MAVERICKS were responsible for three of their 10 losses on the year! In the second round, we played a very hot UTSA team that had just beat the No. 1 seed, Louisiana Tech. Our guys looked like "poetry in motion" on offense, and we won 69-53.
In the championship game, we came up a little short to New Mexico State. I cannot tell you how heartbroken our guys were after the game. They laid it all on the line, but it just wasn't our night. I was extremely sad and upset for my four seniors who have done so much for our basketball program. However, on Sunday, we found out that we had been chosen to host a first round game for the CIT Tournament! We will be playing a very tough Oral Roberts team on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. right here in College Park Center, and we will need a great home crowd to pull out a victory.
Our basketball team has grown so much throughout the year, and our momentum has been increasing, winning 11 of our last 16 games. We could really feel the support from everybody back home as we were striving to win the WAC Tournament Championship. I know everybody was very excited about our chances of going to the NCAA Tournament. We have a great, great opportunity in front of us by hosting a CIT game. This is the first time in school history that UT Arlington basketball has ever played in back-to-back postseason tournaments. In addition to that, we have the chance to celebrate back-to-back 20-win seasons for the first time in school history!
The electricity in CPC during the Oklahoma and Utah State games was amazing. If you were at either one of those games, I know that you left excited about the future of UT Arlington basketball. We NEED all UTA students and supporters to attend this game, simply because YOU REALLY DO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. I am so excited for this great opportunity, and I want you to get excited too and come out and support us. I promise that you will see some of the most exciting and hard working basketball players in the country. They are going to lay their heart and soul on the line on Wednesday for you, and UTA! I hope to see you at the game!
