ARLINGTON, Texas -- During the summer months, UTA will produce a video feature highlighting the success of each of its intercollegiate sports teams from the 2016-17 season. The second of our eight-part series features UTA men's basketball.
The UTA men's basketball program continued to earn national attention in 2016-17, winning a program-record 27 games and advancing to the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The Mavericks won their first Sun Belt Conference championship and finished the season ranked among the top 40 programs in the country.
Road wins at Texas and then No. 12 Saint Mary's highlighted the team's non-conference schedule and a pair of impressive victories at BYU and against Akron in the NIT captured the attention of the college basketball world.
Rising senior Kevin Hervey was selected as the Sun Belt Player of the Year and was honored as the league's top overall Male Student-Athlete of the Year, the conference's highest honor.
Forward Jorge Bilbao and guard Drew Charles graduated as two of the most accomplished players in program history. Bilbao set a program record for most career appearances (127), while Charles is the winningest player in the program's history with 86 victories in his four seasons.
