MBB: Haynes gets NBA Summer League shot with Wizards
July 6, 2013
ARLINGTON, Texas – The next step in former men's basketball standout Marquez Haynes' NBA dream is a Summer League audition with the Washington Wizards.
"Marquez is one of the hardest-working, toughest, most-talented players I've ever coached," UT Arlington coach Scott Cross said. "I have always felt that he is good enough to play in the NBA and only needs a chance. I am confident that when given the opportunity, he will make an NBA GM look like a genius.
"Marquez will make his team better because he is ultra-competitive, never takes a day off and will be the hardest-working player on the team."
Haynes reports to Washington for a four-day mini-camp beginning Monday. The Wizards open 2013 NBA Summer League play on July 13 in Las Vegas.
This is Haynes' third foray in the NBA Summer League. He averaged 5.0 points in four games last season for Oklahoma City. Haynes played for Detroit in 2010.
Haynes has spent the last three seasons playing pro ball internationally. He averaged 12.2 points and 3.2 assists in 2012-13 for the Artland Dragons in Germany's BBL.
Haynes led the Mavericks in scoring in 2009-10, averaging 22.6 points per game during his final collegiate season. Haynes was named to the NABC Division I All-District first team as a senior.
