BOSTON, Mass. -- After earning Lou Henson All-America honors as a junior, UT Arlington senior Kevin Hervey has been named to the preseason watch list for this season’s Lou Henson Award.

The Lou Henson Award is presented annually by CollegeInsider.com to the nation’s top Division I mid-major player. Hervey, the reigning Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year, is one of four players from the league to make the list – along with Georgia State senior D’Marcus Simmonds, Georgia Southern junior Ike Smith and Louisiana senior Bryce Washington.

Lou Henson coached 41 years. When he left the game in 2005 he was sixth all-time in career Division I wins with 779. He is the winningest coach at both Illinois and New Mexico State. He is one of only 12 coaches in the history of the game to take two schools to the Final Four.

The 2017-18 Lou Henson National Player of the Year Award will be announced on March 31, 2018 at the CollegeInsider.com Awards Event in San Antonio, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship

A native of Arlington, Hervey unsurprisingly was named the Sun Belt preseason Player of the Year and has appeared on several lists for league and national mid-major player of the year honors. Several publications have listed Hervey and senior point guard Erick Neal as, perhaps, the best inside-outside combination in the country.

UTA opens its season Saturday at 7 p.m. against Loyola Marymount in College Park Center. The game is part of UTA’s popular homecoming week and will be preceded by a 2:30 p.m. women’s basketball game against Incarnate Word and the annual homecoming parade.
