ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington men's basketball coach Scott Cross signed Friendswood native David Azore to a National Letter of Intent.
Azore, a 6-4 guard who will join the Mavericks next year as a true freshman, is currently a senior at Clear Brook High School. He is ranked as the No. 41 player in the state of Texas, according to Texas Top 100. Azore led district 24-6A in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore and junior and fell just two points shy of the school record with 46 points in a win over La Porte last season. He plays for Coach Christian Thompson at Clear Brook and is a 3-time varsity letter winner heading into his senior season.
"David is a 6-4 lefty that is extremely athletic," said Cross. "He can really slash to the basket and can finish great in traffic. He has also developed a very nice 3-point shot, which makes him even more difficult to defend. David reminds me of current Maverick Kaelon Wilson. David was a sleeper this summer that had a breakout tournament with Coach Chris Walker and the Texas Boys' Athletic Club."
Azore is the second (along with Tim Holland) of four expected signees for the UTA men's basketball program, which is selected by league coaches as the preseason favorite to win the Sun Belt Conference. The Mavericks have advanced to the postseason three times in the last five seasons and won a program-high 24 games twice during that period.
