MBB: Mavs return to action at Samford

ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington returns to the road for Saturday night's nonconference matchup against Samford in Birmingham, Ala. The Mavericks are 1-1 on the season, having won their previous away game at CSU Bakersfield.
The Mavericks and Bulldogs are meeting for the 10th time. Samford leads the series 5-4, having won the last four meetings, including twice since Scott Cross assumed the head-coaching duties at UT Arlington. The teams last played on Jan. 26, 2001, with Samford winning 71-69 in Arlington. UT Arlington's last win in the series (81-72) came in 1987. The series began in 1971.
The Mavericks are coming off a heartbreaking 63-59 loss at College Park Center before a school-record crowd of 6,421. UT Arlington enjoyed as much as a nine-point lead in the first half. The game was tied at 57-all with less than three minutes left before the Sooners pulled away for the win.
"I want to see us rebound from [the Oklahoma] game and go down to Samford and win there," Cross said. "We've been 0-2 against them the first two times we've played them. We need to go down there and bounce back and have a good performance."
Senior forward Kevin Butler leads the Mavericks in scoring at 11.5 points per game. Karol Gruszecki, Jordan Reves, Brandon Edwards and Greg Gainey are each averaging at least 8.5 points. Reves is averaging a team-high 12.0 rebounds.
Samford is 1-5 on the season and 1-0 at the Pete Hanna Center. Tim Williams leads the Bulldogs in scoring at 16.0 points per game.
