NEW ORLEANS, La. -- After posting a pair of eye-catching performances to lead the Mavericks to consecutive wins last week, UTA forward Kevin Hervey was named the Sun Belt Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week.
Hervey, the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year, averaged 26 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and shot .515 from the field and .917 from the free throw line in UTA's home victories over in-state rivals Rice and North Texas. He also handed out five assists and registered five steals as the Mavericks remained undefeated with a 4-0 record in College Park Center.
He began the week by scoring 29 points in a 69-49 victory over Rice with 11 rebounds for his second-straight double-double and the 28th of his career. He went 10-of-18 from the field against the Owls. Against North Texas he scored 23 points and had eight rebounds in a 65-60 win. Hervey has 25 20+ point performances in his career and 29 games of 10+ rebounds.
UTA takes its 7-1 overall record into a pair of high-profile games this week against mid-major powers. The Mavericks travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa for a 7 p.m. contest Thursday night at Northern Iowa then return to College Park Center for a 2 p.m. Saturday game against Florida Gulf Coast University.
The Mavericks continue to earn national recognition, ranking second in this week's collegeinsider.com Mid-Major Top 25, while UNI sits at 12th and FGCU is 16th. UTA has just one loss on its record, a 77-76 road setback at then-25th ranked Alabama. UNI's only losses this year have been at North Carolina and against Villanova in the Battle 4 Atlantis.
The preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year, Hervey is on the watch lists for both the Lou Henson and Lute Olson awards and current ranks 10th nationally in scoring at 23.4. He enters Thursday's game eighth on the UTA career scoring list and should move into the top five by the end of the weekend.
Following this week's games, the Mavericks return to the road for two more challenging games - Dec. 16 at UTRGV and Dec. 18 at Creighton. UTA concludes its non-conference schedule on Dec. 21 at home against Cal Poly.
