Haynes Named SLC Player of the Week
Dec. 7, 2009
Arlington, Texas - UT Arlington guard Marquez Haynes has been named the Southland Conference men's basketball player of the week, the league office announced Monday. Haynes led the Mavericks to a 2-1 record last week, including road wins at Houston Baptist and North Dakota at the Drake Hy-Vee Classic. The senior from Irving, Texas (Irving), was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 26.0 points per game in UT Arlington's two games in Des Moines, Iowa. He scored 22 points against North Dakota and then poured in 30 points in a loss to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville on Saturday. Haynes has scored 30 points or more three times this season and has scored at least 29 four times. In three games last week, he averaged 23.3 points and 2.7 steals. He made 22-of-52 shots (42.3 percent) from the floor, including 8-of-18 from 3-point range, and made 18-of-23 free throws. Honorable mention this week goes to Texas State forward Cameron Johnson, Stephen F. Austin guard Walt Harris and Southeastern Louisiana guard Trent Hutchin. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland men's basketball sports information directors.
Each school's SID nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his or her own player.
