ORLANDO, Fla. - The UTA golf team struggled with a final round 297 to tie Mississippi State for ninth place at the UCF/Rio Pinar Intercollegiate Tournament here Tuesday.
The Mavericks sat in fourth place after the opening day, but could not get untracked Tuesday. Only freshman Zack Reeves (Mansfield, Texas) was able to scratch par on the 6,978-yard, par-72 course Tuesday.
Junior Tyrone Mordt (Johannesburg, South Africa) tied for fifth place in the medalist competition with a final round 76. Mordt birdied the 355-yard, par-4 No. 8 and the 384-yard, par-4 11th hole to go to even-par, but bogeyed four of the finals even holes to finish four-over-par for the day.
The Mavs had their share of trouble on the par-3 holes during the tournament, finishing 24-over-par for the 54-hole tournament.
UTA will return to action March 14-15 at the Palmetto Collegiate Classic in Aiken, S.C.
