PALM DESERT, California -- UTA golf stands in 19th place on Friday after one round at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club.
Sophomore Tanner Gore leads the Mavericks with an individual tie for 28th after shooting 74 on the day. UTA's season-opening round totaled 22-over 310. No. 10 Oregon sits at the top of the leaderboard 6-under 282, with all four nationally ranked opponents inside the top five.
"The team had a rough start to the opening round of the spring season," UTA coach Stuart Deane said. "In very windy conditions, the guys could not make the adjustments necessary. Tanner Gore shot a solid round leading the team through the first day. The guys are upbeat and looking forward to the second round."
Gore locked in an early groove with birdies on holes No. 2, 4 and 5. The sophomore was consistent with even pars on four of the last six holes, grabbing a pair of bogeys on the last two.
Senior Zach Galliford turned in a 4-over performance and is tied for 57th. Galliford recorded an even 36 after the first turn, but two double-bogeys in the latter half of the day, including one on hole 17, set him back. Senior Josh Radcliff finished 5-over to tie for 70th. Aaron Guanlao registered an 83, and Nick Barney followed two strokes behind at 13-over.
The Mavericks are back in action on Saturday with Round 2. Barney will open the day for UTA at 8:40 a.m.
