LELAND, N.C. -- The UT Arlington men's golf team battled wet and cold conditions to claim a 30-stroke victory at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate at Cape Fear National at Brunswick.
The Mavericks turned in team scores of 285-283-290 to finish the 54-hole tournament with a 6-under par 858 and were the only team in the 13-team field to register a team score under par. Jacksonville State finished as runner-up at 24-over.
The victory marks the first outight title for UTA since claiming the 2011 Southland Conference championship in 2011 and is the first for third-year head coach Stuart Deane. Earlier this season, the Mavericks tied for first at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate in Hattiesburg, Miss.
Senior Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) fired a tournament-low 6-under par 66 in today's final round to finish at 1-under par for the tournament and claim third place among the 76-golfer individual field. He recovered from yesterday's difficult first 36 holes to finish just two strokes off medalist honors with a final day round that included six birdies and no bogeys.
VCU freshman Sachin Kumar claimed medalist honors after posting rounds of 70-74-69 to finish at 3-under par, one stroke ahead of Appalachian State sophomore Tripp Summerlin. Kumar, Summerlin and Guanlao were the only golfers in the field to finish the 54 holes with scores under par.
Junior Tanner Gore (El Paso, Texas) finished in fourth place at even par with scores of 68-75-73, while graduate transfer Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas) ended the tournament in a 3-way tie for fifth place at 1-over par.
Freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas) claimed eighth place at 2-over, while senior Jake Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) went 72-72-76 to finish tied for 10th place at 4-over par. Redshirt freshman Zach Cole (Fort Worth, Texas), playing as an individual, posted his best round of the tournament with a 76 on the final day to finish in a tie for 41st.
UTA returns to action on March 19-20 at the Valspar Collegiate Championships at Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla. The team plays five regular season spring events prior to the annual Sun Belt Conference Championships, which are scheduled for April 22-24 at Raven Golf Course in Miramar Beach, Fla.
