Wichita, Kan. - The UTA golf team put together one of their best days of the season as they stand in third after the first 36 holes at the Diet Pepsi Shocker Classic.
Led by Wes Worster and Zack Fischer, the Mavericks shot 285 in the first round and found themselves in the lead after the morning round. UTA fell off the lead in the afternoon round with a team mark of 302 but find themselves just five shots behind leader, and host, Wichita State.
"We played well in the morning but came back to the pack in the afternoon," UTA head coach Jay Rees said. "I thought we would play well today and for the most part we did. We left some shots out on the course in the afternoon but we are in place to make a run for the tournament tomorrow."
Worster was the most consistent of the Mavericks Monday as he shot a one-under par 70 in the first round and then followed that with a 73 in the afternoon. His one-over par score of 143 places him in a tie for second behind Wichita State's Tyler Gann who finished in even par.
Zack Fischer carded a four-under 67 in the first round but struggled to a 77 in the second round. He is still in fifth place at two-over 144.
Donald Dowie is in a tie for ninth after shooting 72-76 for a six-over total of 148. Other Mavericks included Bobby Massa who is in a tie for 30th at +10, 152 and Bryce Easton is in a tie for 53rd after shooting 77-82=159.
Trey Herring is playing as an individual and is also in a tie for 53rd at 159.
