WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The UT Arlington men’s golf team overcame rapidly deteriorating weather conditions to post the one of the best rounds of the afternoon to move into 10th place after 36 holes at the Boilermaker Invitational at Kampen Golf Course.
The Mavericks turned in scores of 298-293 to finish the day at 15-over par, three shots behind ninth place UCF and four behind the University of Michigan. UTA’s second round score of 5-over par was the third lowest of the afternoon.
26th ranked Kent State and 37th ranked Northwestern lead the 17-team field at 3-over par, while the University of Indiana is in third place at 4-over. Host Purdue, ranked 39th nationally, is tied with Toledo for fourth place at 5-over par.
The teams return to the 7,465-yard, par 72 golf course at 8:30 a.m. (CST) tomorrow for the tournament’s final round.
Seniors Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) and Jake Greenspoon (Houston, Texas) were the top UTA golfers, each finishing the first two rounds in a tie for 30th place at 3-over par. Guanlao registered a 1-under par 71 in the morning before dropping a 4-over 76 in the afternoon. Greenspoon rebounded from a morning 78 by equaling his collegiate career low round with a 3-under par 69 in the afternoon.
Freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas) is tied for 41st at 4-over with scores of 75-73, while graduate transfer Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas) is tied for 56th at 7-over par. Junior Tanner Gore (El Paso, Texas) is tied for 70th place overall.
Following the Boilermaker Invitational, the Mavericks travel to Miramar, Fla. for the annual Sun Belt Conference Championships. The league tournament is scheduled for April 22-25 at The Raven Golf Club at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
