ESTORGA, MAVERICKS FINISH SEVENTH AT SLC GOLF CHAMPIONSHIPS

HATTIESBURG, Miss. ...Anthony Estorga shot a third-round 70 to tie for seventh place at the Southland Conference Men's Golf Championship Wednesday, as The University of Texas at Arlington shot 294 on the final day of competition to finish seventh overall among the 10 SLC teams. Lamar won the tournament championship by two strokes.
Estorga, a senior who joined the Mavericks this year after playing his first three years at Texas Wesleyan, finished with a 54-hole 214 after shooting 72 in each of the first two rounds. The seventh-place finish gave Estorga seven top-15 finishes in the Mavericks' 10 tournaments over the fall and springs seasons.
Estorga was eight strokes behind tournament champion Chris Stroud of Lamar, who won his second SLC individual medal in three years. Stroud shot 71-65-70=206 to finish one shot better than Stephen F. Austin's Brian Grossman, who shot 70-71-66=207.
UTA's final round 294 came on the heels of a 297 in the first round Monday and a 288 Tuesday.
Stephen F. Austin finished third at 289-287-279=855, McNeese State was fourth at 290-294-280=864, and Louisiana-Monroe rounded out the top five at 288-297-289=874. Southeastern Louisiana was just in front of the Mavericks in sixth place at 295-287-294=876. Following UTA came Southwest Texas and Sam Houston State, who tied for eighth with 885 totals. SWT shot 293-295-297=885, while the Bearkats shot 298-293-294=885. Nicholls State rounded out the field at 307-302-301=910.
UTA's Brandon Mullen joined Estorga in the top 20, finishing in a tie for 17th. After shooting 74 Monday and the team's top score of the tournament with a 69 Tuesday, Mullen shot 75 Wednesday. He finished with a 218 total. Tyrone Mordt improved his score every round and finished tied for 26th at 76-73-72=221, Landon Allen finished 43rd at 75-74-81=230, and Jordan Krantz shot 83-76-77=236 to finish 48th.
The SLC Tournament concludes UTA's 2002-03 season.
