MG: Play halted due to darkness at SBC Championships

MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. -- After nearly 12 hours of golf, including a 3-hour weather delay, the field finally concluded its first day of competition at the 2017 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championships at Raven Golf Club.

UTA finished its first round with a 13-over par 297 and sat in a tie for ninth place in the 12-team field. The teams finished approximately nine holes of the second round before darkness forced play to be halted around 7:45 p.m. The field will return to the course to finish the second round at 7:30 a.m. with the third, and final, round taking place at 9 a.m..

Georgia State clamed a 6-stroke lead after the first round with a 6-under par 276. Troy is in second place at even par, while Georgia Southern sits in third at 1-over. South Alabama entered the second round at fourth place with a 4-over par 288.

The top four finishers in the team competition advance to Tuesday's match play semifinals. The team champion from match play will earn the league's automatic berth into the NCAA's regional championships.

UTA senior Zach Galliford fired a 1-under par 70 in the tournament's first round to sit in seventh place in the 60-golfer field. The 2016 Welsh Amateur Champion opened his round with a bogey on N0. 10 before rebounding with five straight pars and a pair of birdies on nos. 16 and 17. He moved to 2-under par with a birdie on the par 5 third hole but dropped to even after a double bogey on No. 5. He moved back under par with a birdie on the longest hole on the course, the 631-yard No. 7.



Sophomore Tanner Gore is tied with eight other golfers for 14th place at 1-over par. Aaron Guanlao is tied for 41st at 5-over par, while Josh Radcliff is tied for 52nd and Camilo Avila is tied for 55th.

UTA began its opening round at 7:30 a.m. off the 10th hole and played approximately 9 holes before lightning in the area halted play. The 3 hour, 20 minute weather delay featured thunderstorms, lightning and cool temperatures.

The Mavericks retreated to their rented home just off the No. 1 fairway and the golfers spent time resting, watching English soccer on television and completing homework assignments.
