Golf in 12th after NCAA Regionals First Round

The UT Arlington golf team finds themselves in the same spot where they started after the first day of the NCAA Regional in Tucson, Arizona.
The Mavericks came into the regional seeded 12th and after a 10-over team round of 294, the team finds itself in 12th place.
All five of the Maverick players were over par at the par-71 Omni Tucson National Course on Thursday.
Head coach's Jay Rees' lineup worked in reverse order as his No. 4 player Hunter Brown posted the best round at one-over 72, followed by his No. 3 Paul McConnell at two-over 73, Wes Worster (No. 2) at three-over 74 and No. 1 Zack Fischer finished with a four-over 75.
Brown had a consistent round Thursday as he carded one birdie and two bogeys and stands in a tie for 30th.
McConnell got off to a quick start with a pair of birdies in the first five holes but then had bogeys on three of the next five holes. He then had par on seven of the last eight holes to finish with his 73. He is in a tie for 38th.
Worster had five bogeys in his first 11 holes before finishing with a par of birdies to get back to three-over and finish in a tie for 49th.
Fischer started his round with three consecutive bogeys and shot 40 on his front nine. He then recovered to shoot even par on his last nine holes to record his 74. He finished his round in a tie for 53rd.
The other member of the Mavs, Carson Kallis, shot a six-over 77 Thursday and is in a tie for 63rd.
A balanced attack gave San Diego State the first-round lead. The second-seeded Aztecs placed four golfers at par or better to post a six-under 278 team tally and lead the 14-team field by one stroke.
Washington stands in second place, one stroke back, while Liberty (280/-4), host Arizona (281/-3) and Texas A&M (281/-3) round out the top five places.
UC Davis's Matt Hansen is atop the field of 75 with a first-round 64 (-7).
