SUGAR GROVE, ILL. – UT Arlington senior Brad Mason is in contention after Friday's first round of the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms.

Competing as an individual, Mason shot a 2-under 70 at the 7,236-yards yard course. The senior carded three birdies and one eagle, shooting 3-under on the back 9 after being 1-over on the front. Mason is tied for seventh, three shots off the lead.

As a team, UT Arlington shot a combined 13-over 301. The Mavericks sit in ninth place after the first round, with the second round Saturday and the final 18 holes Sunday.

Sophomore Riley Fleming led UT Arlington's team contingent with a plus-1 73 that was tied for 23rd. Rounding out team were junior Andrew Cornella (75, T33), junior Cash Wilkerson (76, T41), freshman Zach Galliford (77, T47) and junior Jake Argento (78, T58).

"Our goal was to eliminate all the big numbers and three putts," UT Arlington golf coach Jay Rees said. "We didn't accomplish our goal, but our goal will be the same tomorrow. But Brad and Riley played well today."
