MG: Mavericks are tied for 11th at Kiawah Island
UT Arlington men's golf sits 11th after Sunday's opening round of the Kiawah Island Invitational. The three-day event at The Ocean Course continues Monday with the second round.
The Mavericks shot a combined 22-over-par 310 in their first competitive team round of the season. Florida leads the 15-team field with a plus-1 289. WAC conference rival Texas State (308) is 10th.
UTA coach Jay Rees said his team wasn't as comfortable as it could have been on one of the country's toughest courses. The Mavs didn't get to play the back 9 in Saturday's practice round and that lack preparation was evident Sunday.
"We have two days to get rid of the doubles and triples, which we will do," Rees said. "We've just got to used used to the lines and we've got to hit fairways.
"We have a lot of talent here. If we eliminate the doubles and triples we're sitting in about third or fourth place. We've got to prove we can get the ball in play. I expect us to play well tomorrow and be competitive."
