SOUTH BEND, Ind. - UT Arlington golf is 11th after the first day of the Fighting Irish Gridiron Golf Classic at Warren Golf Course. The first two rounds were played Monday, with the final round Tuesday.
The Mavericks were tied for ninth after the first round, shooting a 13-over-par 297. UT Arlington dropped a couple of spots with an afternoon round of plus-20 304.
"Our ball striking and putting let us down," UT Arlington coach Jay Rees said. "We talked in our nightly meeting about making adjustments to be more consistent with our ball striking.
"I expect us to get better tomorrow. The guys have a good mindset and they know they have a lot of work ahead of us."
Marley Sweeney, a junior transfer competing in his first tournament for UTA, was tied for 17th after a 1-over 72 in the first round. He followed that up with a 77 to fall into a tie for 35th.
Junior Joss Gosling jumped 20 spots in Round 2, improving from a 76 (T51) to 72 (T31).
"I'm disappointed with the start of this season," Rees said. "We have a lot of work ahead of us. There are no shortcuts to building a championship team. We have to work harder with our wedges, chipping and putting the golf ball."
